This
is
an
alabao
(religious
song
of
praise)
which
is
known
all
along
the
Pacific
coast
of
Colombia,
this
being
only
one
of
many
versions.
During
the
festival
of
Saint
Anthony
every
August,
a
statue
of
the
saint
is
carried
downriver
in
a
canoe,
steered
by
a
canoero
(paddler)
who
calls
out
the
song.
The
rest
of
the
village
follows
in
dozens
of
canoes,
responding
to
the
call.
The
ritual
is
a
Christian
adaptation
of
a
West
African
tradition.
"Look
how
beautifully
they
are
bringing

of
flowers.
