- StickyNote versions 4.5 / 5.0 from http://www.tenebril.com/ is an excellent post-it-notes utility. The new freeware version6 program will not work without a net connection.

- Win95 Powertoys - Useful tools, especially the send-to, dos-prompt-here and tweak-ui utilities. All work under NT except quickres ; see video utilities below for NT-compatible alternatives to quickres

- Funduc Software have a freeware uuencode/binhex/base64 Decode Extension and Hexview utilities
- Scraper by Don Metzler lets you copy hard-to-get text from dialog boxes etc. to the clipboard. Handy for reporting error messages, grabbing email addresses, URLs etc.

Mouse-- Peepshow lets you poke holes through windows, scroll using the right mouse button, pop up a menu via mouse gestures & more
- MouseImp adds a soft-scroll function to your mouse. Also has an auto-rollup feature for infrequently used windows/toolbars. [2002-08-20] The MouseImp web site - http://www.tv4studios.com/ - has disappeared and the most recent versions (MouseImpPro) are not freeware. - TaskWheel by Ignacio Alvarez lets you switch between tasks with your mouse wheel when the cursor is over the taskbar. Seems to get stuck on MS-DOS windows, though.

Startup / Shutdown

- Startup Manager by Brad Stowers enables & disables auto-start programs in the the startup folders, registry & WIN.INI file.

- TrapSD from Pyzzo Software lets you run programs on shutdown or on user logout.

- Flee from F2 is simple shutdown/restart/logoff utility that can be run either as a command-line program or as a taskbar icon
Auto Action- Sick of pressing a confirmation dialog button to say 'yes I want to delete this file, in fact that's why I clicked delete!' ? rtvreco (5.0 beta is freeware; recent versions aren't) from RTVSoft will press buttons and select menu items for you automatically.

- Push The Freakin' Button is another tool for automated button-pushing. On modern computers, you should bump up the response time in the settings pannel.

- AutoIt from HiddenSoft simulates key presses, mouse movements and window commands (maximize, minimize, wait for, etc.) to automate windows based tasks (or even windowed DOS tasks). Script based ; scripts can be compiled into stand-alone programs. Requires Windows Installer for installation.

Clocks / Timers

- TinyClock from F2 is a tiny clock that runs as a floating window and/or a tray icon
- CursorClock by Noah Spurrier changes the default mouse pointer to the current 12/24 hour time. Unobstrusive, but can obscure tooltip windows.
- AleJenJes Timer by Tim Winkfein is a small, easy-to-use countdown timer (whole minutes only). Requires Visual Basic v5.0 SP3 runtime files.

Fred's pick: - TrayMenu by Wei Ke lets you create cascading menus from one or more tray icons. I've used it to create a start menu replacement which displayed customized icons for folders and allowed grouping / ordering without MS IE4.

- Start Without Me by Neil J. Rubenking lets you get rid of seldom-used start-menu items (Win95,Win98,WinNT).

Transparent by Jay Guerette will turn your Win9x/NT desktop icon text backgrounds transparent, allowing your wallpaper to show through.
- Hidden Menu by CoPos pops up a customisable menu when the mouse is moved to a (customisable) corner or edge of the screen. No cascading menus, but very easy to use. Download from Hidden Menu Home Page (very slow!) (388 Kbyte) ; download from f2.org (380 Kbyte)
- ButtonBoogie lets you rearrange & resize taskbar buttons. Win 85/98/ME/NT/2000, not XP.

Hide Unwanted Windows

Best of bunch: TraySaver by Mike Lin will automatically hide windows and/or taskbar icons by program name, window title or tooltip label.
