Object International's whiteboard edition of Together/J used to be free ; later [Jan 2002 or before] a commercial product from TogetherSoft ; currently [Sep 2003] being offered by Borland. The original product produced lovely object-modelling diagrams of your source code, but didn't actually compile projects; could be used in conjunction with other IDEs. Not sure what the current incarnation does.

Jikes is a freely available compiler from IBM that translates Java source files as defined in The Java Language Specification into the bytecoded instruction set and binary format defined in The Java Virtual Machine Specification. Features include:
- strict adherence to the language specification [better warnings than the JDK compiler],
- extremely fast compile speed,
- built-in dependence analysis, allowing incremental compilation and automatic makefile generation.
